Newer versions of the O.H.R.RPG.C.E support BAM music by converting it into MIDI, so this information is obsolete. It is provided here for historical curiosity.

This is a list of soundcards, and info on how they have been reported to work with older DOS versions of the O.H.R.RPG.C.E (and indeed, this will probably be a good reference for ALL DOS-games FM-Music soundcard compatability) If you are having problems playing sound in Windows Programs, or having problems getting your soundcard to work at all, this page is totally irrelevant to your problem. I repeat! This information is only useful for the OHRRPGCE. If your sound card doesn't work in Windows at all, SOLVE THAT PROBLEM FIRST!

Also, if you are having trouble with BAM music on Windows NT, 2000, or XP, try out VDMSound, which you can download from http://ntvdm.cjb.net/ or http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/. I have tried it out myself, and have been well-pleased with it. Many OHRRPGCE users have gotten BAM music working with its help. It is a software FM-synthesis emulator.
[Note: In case you cannot figure it out, you must right-click on the program and pick "Run with VDMSound"]
[Note: Good news for Windows 98 users, there is a semi-unoffical port of VDMSound to Windows 9x available from http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=900 ]

Until recently, VDMSound was not available for Windows 95/98/ME, but now there is a new alpha test version that works on the older Windows platforms too! See http://vogons.zetafleet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=900 for more info.

An additional option is to try running the OHRRPGCE in DOSBOX, which is a DOS emulator that often provides better support for games than Windows own built-in DOS support does. (You need a fast computer for DOSBOX to run well)

This list used to contain IRQ, DMA, and I/O information, but it was almost always completely irrelevant, so I removed it. Ancient ISA sound cards may still require I/O address 0380-038B to work in a true DOS-style direct-port-access method, but nowadays, any sound cards that do have DOS support provide this support virtually rather than requiring specific resources. Anyway, a properly configured old-fasioned ISA sound card should normally use the following resources: IRQ 5, I/O Ranges: 0220-022F and 0380-038B ... but I repeat, for modern sound cards, PCI sound cards, built-in sound cards, IRQ and I/O ranges are so irrelevant it is hardly worth checking them.

Win 98 Reported to work by one person (who had to turn the volume WAAAY up), but reported not to work by several others. Hard to say if it was the resources or the driver version that made the difference. I believe this one is integrated into a motherboard.
(good) Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 ISA 4.38.13 Win 95 Works great! (this is the same model of card we used when originally writing the BAM format)
(iffy) Creative Labs Soundblaster 2.0 DOS Works, but sound quality is very poor.
(good) Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Windows 95 98 ME NT 2000 XP All Sound Blaster Live! Cards including the 128, the X-gamer, the Value, and anything else that has "Live!" in it's name will work, provided that you have the latest driver from creative labs installed. Some people have reported problems when the card is using an older driver version (I believe 008 did not work, but 009 and newer works fine). A user of the Live! 1024 Value tells me that it is even possible to add effects such as reverb to BAM music with this card.
(iffy) Creative Labs Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 Legacy Win 98 Reported to work, but many instruments are missing/wrong. Have you had different experiences with this card? let us know. A couple users reported being unable to get it to work at all. Note that this is basicly the same card as a Sound Blaster Live! so if you have the latest drivers it *should* work.
(iffy) Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 64 (Sound Blaster Legacy Device) Win 98 Behaves like the soundblaster 128. Many instruments are wrong. Drums sound "crushed". Have you had different experiences with this card? let us know.
(iffy) Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 PCI (Sound Blaster AudioPCI Legacy Device) Win 98 Works great if the drivers are installed properly, but has been reported not to work by one person. I tested this one myself at work, and heard awful blaring static noises until I updated the BIOS of my VIA chipset Motherboard. After that it sounded great.
(iffy) Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE 64 Value Win 98
Win 2000
Worked with the DOS drivers installed on Win 98. Did not work at all on Win 2000
(good) Creative Labs SoundBlaster 512 (Creative SB16 Emulation) Win 98
Works well, good sound quality! Make sure you install DOS support (installed by default) (This card is very similar to the "Sound Blaster Live!" series)
(bad) Creative Labs Soundblaster AudioPCI (WDM) Win ME
Doesn't work, I believe this is the integrated version of the Soundblaster that is built into some motherboards (but I am not certain)
(good) Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy MP3+   Some users complained that this card would not work, but Creative Labs Tech-Support tells me you just need to install the DOS drivers located on the CD. Has anyone tried this? Let me know.
(bad) ESS Technologies ESS Typhoon Theatre (ESS Canyon 3d 2 PCI Audio) Win 98 SE Reported not to work on any DOS games.
(bad) ESS Technologies ESS Allegro PCI Audio version 016 Win 98 Reported not to work.

Win 95 Reported to work very well with no special effort.
(iffy) ESS Technologies Ess AudioDrive 1688F DOS Win 98 Win Me Two people have reported it to work in true DOS (using the "laptop drivers"?) And one reported success in Windows ME on "rear" MotherBoards (IWill P55XB2,...)
(bad) VIA Tecnologies, Inc. VIA PCI Audio Controller (WDM) Win 98 Reported not to work by more than one person. This one is integrated into many VIA motherboards. Its best to disable it in the BIOS and buy a real sound card. One person has reported making this card work after restarting in DOS mode
(iffy) VIA Tecnologies, Inc. VIA AC'97 AUDIO CODEC (WDM) DOS Win Integrated into many VIA motherboards. It does not support FM music in any version of Windows, but has drivers to support it in true DOS. Sound quality is remarkably bad
(iffy) Intel AC'97 Driver for Intel(r) 82801A Controller Win 98 Intel's AC'97 integrated audio doesnt seem to work either. As far as I understand AC'97 is a standard for sound cards that are built into motherboards. If your sound card claims to be AC'97 then chances are it will NOT work (unless it ALSO claims full-sound-blaster-compatability or legacy-DOS-support)
(good) Aztech Labs SC128 SC128 3D Legacy Relocator for PCI Audio Device 4.05.00.1102-1.01.06 Win 98 Works great. This is the one I use at home.

Another user reports that it does not work. Possibly driver-version related.
(bad) Analog designs, Inc [homepage?] SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio (032) (5.12.01.2509) Win 98, Win ME, Win XP reported by many people not to work at all. Another reported that it worked, but was barely audible even with the volume all the way up. Another reported that it worked fine for awhile, but now just makes static. "Integrated" sound cards tend to suck...

(iffy) SiS SiS 7018 Hardware Audio (SiS 7018 Audio Driver) Win 98 Win ME Win 2000 Win XP Reported to work great on Windows 98 and ME, but others report awful distortion on Windows 2000 and XP. One user reported success after installing the sis2kv3110.exe drivers found at http://www.pbnec.nl/support/drv/cat445.html
