FyreWulff's OHRBOX: DOSBOX Optimized for the OHRRPGCE. "from the maker of FyreSetting: VDMS Optimized for the OHRRPGCE!" INSTRUCTIONS: installation Extract ohrbox.conf to your DOSBOX directory. It should be in the same directory as the DOSBOX.EXE. INSTRUCTIONS: usage There are multiple ways to use the OHRBOX settings for DOSBOX: 1. Extract OHRBOX.BAT to your DOSBOX directory. Create a shortcut to this BAT file on your Desktop or location of your choice, if you don't want to browse to the DOSBOX directory everytime you want to use DOSBOX for the OHR. Then simply double-click the BAT file or use your shortcut, and DOSBOX will be loaded up with it's new settings. 2. Create a shortcut to the DOSBOX exe. After locating the file, write this: "C:\yourdosboxdir\dosbox.exe" -conf ohrbox.conf Then every time you use the shortcut, it will load the OHRBOX settings. 3. Rename OHRBOX.CONF to DOSBOX.CONF (You should backup the original settings if you have tweaked them for other games) and it will automatically load the OHRBOX settings every time you use the DOSBOX.EXE After loading up, you will be brought to a C prompt. The mounting of drives has already been taken care of for you, so just use cd to find your ohr directory, then type "game" or "custom" (without the quotes) to run either program. INSTRUCTIONS: tweaking I have heavily optimzed the shortcut, but you might still have a sluggish OHR experience if you have a slow computer. Although I have perfected the sound emulation (should be no pops or skips), the other parts of the game might get slow. Press CTRL-F12 to increase the emulated MHz of DOSBOX, and CTRL-F11 to decrease. Be careful not to go above what your computer can handle, or it'll slow down the emulation even more. A good way to find your computer's sweetspot is to press ALT CTRL DEL on WindowsXP to bring up your task manager, and click the Processes tab. Now alt-enter while in the game to window-fy GAME.EXe, and press Ctrl-F12 while keeping an eye on your "CPU Usage" % as you go. Around 95% usage, you will not gain anymore speed. Test machines: 1Ghz Duron, perfect sound, slightly sluggish walkaround mode, battles playable 2.3 Pentium 4 (or 3?), OHR ran perfectly after overclocking DOSBOX using CTRL-F12 Please note that if you are on a Linux or Apple/Macintosh/OSX/etc you will need to change the mount command near the bottom of ohrbox.conf using your favorite text editor. INSTRUCTIONS: known bugs * PLAYING.TMP does not get deleted after GAME.EXE quits. Something to do with the DOSBOX emulation most likely. You will have to manually delete PLAYING.TMP after each game you play. * Window mode WILL SLOW YOU DOWN. Fullscreen is where it's at. * Not an actual bug, but GAME.EXE -will- hang when you exit menus, or go to a new map, or on the initial load, and a few other places. This is due to DOSBOX's slow emulation of the program's harddrive read/writes. Now you know how James fit all of that into so little memory! Please send feedback to mkidder@gmail.com
